Part III

Days of Destiny

Johan and his family buried Mareili and lingered in Görlitz for two more months, waiting for good weather. In March 1531 they started the final stage of their migration to Krakow. And thus it was, a little over a year after they fled Basel, the Hirschberg family came to Krakow and the court of Sigismund I.

On the day they arrived, as Johan stood in the courtyard with his father talking with the stable master, he was being watched from a window above. Had he known what was in store for him and the girl looking down at him, he might have urged his father to find work elsewhere. But the Lord had already intertwined these two lives from far distant places and that intertwining would affect many generations.
