CANADA’S ACCESS-TO-INFORMATION SYSTEM HAS WORSENED UNDER TRUDEAU GOVERNMENT

As Laura Stone reported in the Globe and Mail, a freedom-of-information audit by News Media Canada, a national association representing Canadian news media, gave the Liberals a failing grade on disclosure of information. It was, the audit noted, “even worse than in the latter years of the former Stephen Harper government.”

More worrisome still were provisions brought forward by the Liberals that would have allowed access-to-information requests to be rejected based solely on their size, scope, or if they were considered “vexatious.” As Nathan Cullen put it, “It’s got to be a bad day for Liberals when Stephen Harper was more open to the Canadian public than they are.”
