MANSPLAINING 101: When Justin used the word peoplekind at a town hall meeting in Edmonton, media around the world, from the BBC to CNN, laughed at him. Scrambling to avoid further ridicule, he claimed he was only “joking.” But if you watch the clip, easily found on YouTube, it’s painfully clear that he was not joking. Not in the least. He has a smug smile, but that doesn’t make it a joke.
TO RECAP: Justin Trudeau (a) interrupts a woman to (b) mansplain the proper use of pronouns to her. Here is a transcript of the key moment in that exchange:
Young woman asking about government policies regarding charities:
“Maternal love is the love that is going to change the future of mankind, so we’d like you to—”
Justin Trudeau (cutting her off; note the use of the Royal “We”):
“We like to say peoplekind, not necessarily mankind. It’s more inclusive.”
Pander much?
