I really thought that Justin had topped himself with four—count ’em four—ethics violations over his visit to a billionaire’s private island. (Justin Trudeau, Champion of the Middle Class!) But in 2019, it was announced that Justin was now under his fifth ethics investigation, in this case over allegations of political interference into a criminal prosecution.
When Justin named the highly respected First Nations lawyer and former Crown Prosecutor Jody Wilson-Raybould to the post of Justice Minister and Attorney General, it was heralded as an important milestone for Indigenous women. Alas, Justin would soon receive a lesson in integrity from Ms. Wilson-Raybould.
She became concerned that Justin and his staff were trying to politically interfere in the criminal prosecution of a Liberal-friendly Quebec firm, SNC-Lavalin, which had been charged with bribery and corruption in the case of Libyan dictator Muammer Gaddafi’s son who had reportedly been paid millions and plied with Montreal prostitutes by SNC-Lavalin during his visit to Canada. (SNC-Lavalin had also illegally donated more than $100K to the Liberals, which the Liberals were forced to return, hence the use of my phrase “Liberal-friendly firm.”)
After Wilson-Raybould refused to cut a deal with the company, in spite of ongoing pressure from Justin Trudeau and the PMO, she was unceremoniously dumped as Justice Minister, which the Liberals insisted was just a coincidence. Possible political interference in an ongoing criminal prosecution? Those are serious, serious charges. And yet, a Liberal majority justice committee quickly shut down the inquiry saying, essentially, “Move along folks! Nothing to see here!”
