A GENTLEMAN GETS
DRESSED FOR A
FUNERAL

When dressing for a funeral, whether he is a member of the mourning family or the attending congregation, a gentleman dresses in the most somber attire he has at hand. Ideally, he wears a dark suit (either black, navy, or dark gray—striped or unstriped); a simple, clean, freshly laundered shirt (white is the most dignified choice); a quiet tie (in a solid color or a simple pattern, eschewing any business logos or clever sayings); dark socks; and black, freshly polished shoes.

At a funeral, in any religious tradition, a gentleman realizes that his personal appearance is of little moment, especially to the bereaved. He dresses quietly, in acknowledgment of that fact.
