A GENTLEMAN GETS
DRESSED FOR A
RELIGIOUS SERVICE

A gentleman need no longer worry about setting out his suit, tie, shirt, shoes, and socks in preparation for services at his house of worship. Still, it is never wrong for a gentleman to dress as soberly, and somberly, as he wishes when attending any religious service. If he is taking a public role in the service—as an usher, a reader, or leader of the congregational music—he may opt for business suit, tie, and black shoes.

On the other hand, each religious community, whatever its faith or affiliation, has its own, undecreed dress code. A gentleman may choose either to acknowledge or to disregard that simple reality. At the same time, a gentleman remembers that a religious service, in any faith, is a communal experience. At no time would a gentleman dress in a way that would make him the center of attention—or a reason for comment.
