A GENTLEMAN GETS
DRESSED FOR A
CONCERT
Attending an orchestra concert or an opera performance is no longer the semiformal ritual that it once was. Gentlemen in sports coats, pullover sweaters, and polo shirts are often seen, even in the priciest sections of the house. But since such performances are meant to be a break from the doldrums of workaday life, a gentleman may wish to opt for a dark suit and tie. Unless he is attending a formal event, either before or after the performance— and unless he wishes it to be assumed that he is a member of the cello section—a gentleman feels no obligation to wear black tie to a standard performance by a symphony orchestra or an opera company.
