Throughout the years, I’ve been lucky to meet other fellow artists in person and online while teaching mixed-media workshops. Some of the wonderful artists I’ve met have become friends I’ve been able to count on in different situations, like in collaborative work, joint museum visits, co-teaching events, discussions or general support of my art and personal life. This group of people is a vital and significant part of my life. They share with me the belief that it makes us better artists when we share and care. Spending time and working together requires mutual respect for the work and views of each person involved. Each time I’ve opened myself up to other artists, they’ve unlocked new sparks for ideas in my artwork.
It’s important to have a network of like-minded and encouraging friends; that in itself is very motivating. Furthermore, their artwork is a constant inspiration for me. It gives insight into my friends’ lives, their subject matter and their interpretations of their surroundings.
I invited ten of my artist friends to contribute artwork based on any of the themes in this book—cities and town centers, traveling, nature, art museums and galleries, literature and movies or people—and asked them to share with you what inspired them, how they translated it and how they suggest turning observations and experiences into artwork.
I hope their artwork and tips inspire you as much as they have me and give you further ideas on how to translate the inspiration around you into your own special mixed-media artwork.
