Brigit
Brigit woke to Megan gently shaking her. She peeked her eyes open just enough to see that the window was still dark. Screw this. If Megan wanted to get up in the middle of the night, she could leave Brigit out of it.
Megan shook her again, harder. Without opening her eyes, Brigit emitted a low growl. Grrr.
Megan put her mouth to the dog’s ear and whispered, “Treat?”
Well, now. That changes everything.
Brigit opened her eyes and climbed down from the bed. Megan clipped her leash to her collar and quietly opened the door to their room, slipping into the hall and closing it softly behind them.
After Megan fed her a liver treat, they went down the stairs and into the dimly lit lobby. Two girls and a boy still worked at a table in the lounge, while another boy slept on the couch, his arm thrown back over his head as he snored. They didn’t seem to notice Brigit and her partner crossing the foyer.
Megan led her across the open space, pausing before a door and opening it slightly, putting her ear to the crack to listen. Poor humans and their inferior ears. With Brigit’s superior hearing, she could tell there was nobody in the restroom. She could tell that one of the sinks was dripping, though. Drip-drip-drip.
Megan led her inside, ducking into each of the toilet stalls. While the ladies’ room they’d been in earlier today had been relatively clean, the scent of urine was very strong here, especially around the floor of the urinals. Male humans were like male dogs, aiming their stream in the general direction of a urinal or tree trunk and not much worrying whether they hit their target.
A few seconds later, Megan led her back into the foyer. As long as they’d come down, Brigit figured she might as well relieve herself, too. She pulled Megan in the direction of the front doors.
After crouching in the bushes flanking the front steps of the building, Brigit felt much better. She and Megan returned to their dorm room, where Megan slowly and carefully ran her ID card through the skimmer. The resulting click was as loud as a bark in the silent hallway.
Megan opened the door and they slunk back into the room.
Emily sat up in her bed. “Can’t you two be more quiet?” she hissed.
