Throughout this book, I’ve mentioned again and again that situations arise for which there is no specific manners rule. That’s when I use the essential principles of etiquette—consideration, respect, and honesty—to figure out what to do.
START WITH CONSIDERATION. Be aware of how a current situation affects everyone involved.
SHOW RESPECT FOR EACH PERSON INVOLVED. Think of several possible courses of action and examine how each solution affects each person.
BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF. Be truthful with yourself as you select the solution that best solves the problem for all the people involved.
Each time you use the three principles to help identify the best course of action, the outcome for you is the same: confidence. When you feel confident, you exude confidence. When you exude confidence, people trust you and react positively to you. People like to associate with people they trust.
That is why etiquette is valuable to you. Use it, enjoy how people respond to you, and watch yourself become ever more successful in your daily life, your social life, and your work life. Good luck!
