Celso Lagar Arroyo (1891-1966) was a Spanish expressionist painter, who formed part of the first generation of artists of the School of Paris, in which city he lived for most of his life. He was influenced by several avant-garde movements, including Cubism and Fauvism, producing mostly landscapes and still lifes. At a personal level, he suffered from depression and became completely dependent on his wife, the French sculptor Hortense Begué. Completed in 1915, Modigliani’s portrait of Lagar presents a more personal rendition than seen in the previous plates. The figure is presented between two different viewpoints, influenced by cubist artworks, where Lagar appears in profile, as well as full on, fusing the portrait with a sense of movement. Expressive lines spiral from right to left, as the mouth is open and the eyes are visible, achieving a more emotional visage.
