Warning

‘The message was received and decoded this morning, Sir Hugh. It states quite clearly that it has been automatically generated as a result of Robert Perrin failing to prevent its dispatch: that obviously being due to his present unfortunate circumstances. It also suggests that, if he should further be unable to prevent it, a detailed log of incriminating data will automatically be dispatched to the National Crime Agency.’

‘Yes, yes, Jones, I can see all that here.’ Sir Hugh scanned the printout. ‘But is this it? Does this disgusting rodent make no suggestion of a timescale?’

‘No, sir. This message may have been set up recently, at the same time as the announcement of his intention to cease all dealings with the Organisation. And we should consider the possibility that the suggested dispatch of incriminating data might be an empty threat. Indeed, this warning may be the full extent of our problem.’

Sir Hugh re-read the printout. ‘Have you been able to determine its source?’

‘The message seems to have been bounced around various IP addresses.’

‘An earthly location, Jones?’

‘Sir Hugh, Mr Perrin has, in the past, proved himself to be supremely capable of defeating the most advanced IP locating software. Our preliminary search of the Royston Computer Solutions offices and last week’s extensive search of Perrin’s Exeter property have both provided nothing. The Source informs us that the police have confiscated the remaining hardware from Perrin’s business premises, although so far, as our operatives concluded, they have not managed to access anything that needs concern us directly. A further attempt will be made to question Mr Perrin as soon as he is moved from the Intensive Care Unit. And I have arranged for a team of operatives to undertake an immediate search of the Denham property.’

‘Yes, yes. But, let us be clear, Jones. There are to be no more bodies.’

‘Obviously, Sir Hugh. My operatives will be very discreet.’
