A short detox can be a great way to jumpstart weight loss, clear your body of toxins, give your digestive system a break, and get you going on a healthier diet. Here are some tips for your juicing detox.
• Plan to detox for 1–3 days. Generally speaking, juice is not meant to replace food for longer than that. Longer detoxes can be helpful in certain situations. If you feel your body needs a 5- or 7-day detox, talk to a doctor and do your own research before you begin.
• For 3 days before your detox, start limiting or cutting out completely certain foods and beverages, such as coffee, tea, soda, sugar, meat, dairy, alcohol, and wheat. Easing off these things gradually make your detox easier and may make it more effective.
• During the detox, plan to consume 32 to 96 ounces of juice a day, making sure your juices are at least 50 percent from vegetables.
• Drink plenty of water during the detox to clear out your system between juices.
• Drink your juices slowly and plan to have one every two hours. This will help to keep your blood sugar even, which helps prevent dizziness, mood swings, and cravings.
• If you need to make your juice for the whole day all at once, store the juice you’re not going to drink immediately in a glass jar with a tight lid, and keep it refrigerated until you drink it.
• Don’t plan to be very physically active during your fast. Your body will be processing plenty without the additional strain.
• After the detox, reintroduce food gradually over several days.
