The meeting broke up after that, leaving us all with much to think about.

Dai and I remained at the laundry, while the constable offered Aiden a ride back before returning to his family. I tidied up the break room and washed the glasses we used, my thoughts heavy. While I was glad we had been able to bring Laura's murderer to justice, the collateral damage established the victory as a rather bitter one.

"I suppose we should head on home once you're finished, Jacques." Dai reached down to pet Prince, who rolled onto his back and made sure his furred belly was within her reach.

Though I had expected it, it still made me a little sad to hear the touch of despondency in her voice now that the case was over. She had experienced more in the last few days than in the last five years put together.

"You were magnificent, Dai. No one else could have pulled this off like you did." I would need to find a way to distract her. Perhaps inviting Aiden for a visit in a few days would do the trick. Meeting her had been the bright spot in this ugly business. I would be more than happy for Dai to forget this—and the fact Pierce existed. "Though I must admit, even with your bodyguard in place, my heart almost stopped when Mrs. Grey grabbed you."

Her fearless guardian was currently wriggling in pleasure at his mistress' ministrations.

"I doubt we'll ever have a situation like that come up again." The wistful tone lacing her words contrasted with my relief at hearing them.

While I was glad she'd made new friends and solved the prickly mystery, I could have done without the dangers she had encountered, both socially and physically. I would be more than thrilled to never run such risks again.

But even as I thought that, I felt the nape of my neck prickle, as if it knew something I did not.
