“Why Don’t They Communicate Better?”
In the many workshops I’ve facilitated over the years, this scene has played out over and over again: I’ll ask, “What’s the biggest problem facing your organization today?” Almost every time, the answer is not change or competition, but communication, which is generally framed like this: “Why don’t they communicate better?”
Communication. It’s a big problem. Partly because we seem confused over what excellent communication looks like and how we get there.
Effective communication is not someone else’s job, nor does it begin with being understood. Rather, it’s about understanding the other person.
In many organizations today people are striving to hold better conversations and experience a higher level of dialogue with their colleagues. A terrific way to get there is to ask QBQs such as “What can I do to become a more effective listener?” or “How can I better understand others?”
