Unicorn Headband

You should always be yourself, unless you can be a unicorn that is! Why not both? For this project, we’ll attach a stuffed horn to a headband and adorn it with simple rolled flowers. I used a metal headband, but a soft, stretchy nylon headband works well, too. No matter what, this project will transform the wearer into the most magical creature in all the land.

2 rolled roses made from 6˝ or 7˝ felt squares with a large green calyx glued to the back and up the sides of each one

UNICORN HEADBAND

STEP 1: Stitch the horn. Thread the needle with three strands of embroidery floss. You’ll want a generous amount, about three feet long. Knot the end of the floss. Fold the triangle piece of felt in half lengthwise. Whipstitch the long edge of the triangle closed, starting at the bottom (wide) end and working toward the point. When you get to the top, tie off the thread but do not trim it. Leave the bottom end unstitched for now.

STEP 2: Stuff the horn. Fill the horn with stuffing. Make sure you fill the point of the horn. Use a pencil or chopstick to push the stuffing all the way to the top. Add enough stuffing so the horn is firm and holds its shape.

STEP 3: Close the horn. Glue or stitch the felt circle to the bottom of the horn to close it.

STEP 4: Wrap the horn. Take the tail end of the embroidery floss and wrap it tightly around the horn from top to bottom. Hold the top of the horn to keep it straight while you wrap it. When you reach the bottom, glue or stitch the floss to the underside of the horn.

STEP 5: Attach the felt square. Apply a line of glue down the center of the felt square and press it to the underside of the headband, positioning it in the center.

STEP 6: Attach the horn. Cover the bottom of the horn with glue and press it into the center of the headband and felt square. Be sure the stitching up the side of the horn is perpendicular to the headband so you can position it facing back when wearing the headband.

STEP 7: Add the large roses. Glue the large roses onto the front and back of the horn. Be sure to add glue to both the felt and the base of the horn to secure the flowers.

STEP 8: Add the small roses. Glue the small roses onto the sides of the horn. Be sure to add glue to both the felt and the base of the horn to secure the flowers.

STEP 9: Trim the felt. Trim away any portions of the felt base that are sticking out past the flowers.

STEP 10: Finish. If desired, add extra leaves. You can use them to cover exposed glue or fill empty spots.
