  1. Does someone in your life raise their child/children as a single parent? Are their problems similar or different from Ashley’s and in what way?
  2. Ashley worked from her home. This allowed her to be with Joey and still earn a living. Do you know anyone who works from their home? What jobs are available for working out of the home? Can the person earn a living?
  3. What are some ways employers could help single parents?
  4. Do you know a firefighter personally? How does his/her career affect the individual’s life? What are the pros and cons of a career like this?
  5. Ashley lost her husband in Afghanistan and now fears falling in love with a firefighter. Is her fear realistic? Why? If not, why not?
  6. What experience in your past causes you to avoid relationships or other aspects of your life? Or have you been able to overcome the fear, and if so, how?
  7. Ashley and Devon referred to the scripture from Proverb 3:5, Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. What does this verse mean to you?
  8. Can you understand or relate to the mother-daughter struggle that Ashley, Neely and Paula experienced? Have situations in your life resulted in strained relationships with you and a parent?
  9. The children played a big role in this novel. How did they affect your enjoyment of the story?
  10. Devon worried about putting Kaylee in the middle of a custody battle even though she wanted to live with her father. Do you think Devon’s concern was right and why?
  11. What qualities did you admire about Ashley and Devon as parents?
  12. We’ve heard Jesus say in Matthew 12:16 Out of the mouth of infants... Kaylee’s comparison of a puzzle to the new family was unique and does express that children’s view of life is bold and different from adults’. Their praise is from the heart, and so was her comparison. How did that comparison relate to your own family?
