Along with the challenges and potential hazards, your journey also offers ample rewards. At every turn, you may take in the breathtaking scenery of divine wisdom or wide-open vistas of the expanded mind. Such wonderful discoveries remind us why we went on the journey in the first place.

To maximize such rewards from the journey, we look to the essential skills in applying the Tao. The more we can navigate through life skillfully, the more we will be able to enjoy the experience. To that end, Chuang Tzu gives us the following tips:

  1. Use your ability to observe everything from a detached perspective. Bear witness to the marvelous workings of life and tap into your inner knowing about the world. You may find that you are wiser than you realize when you fully utilize your connection to the Tao.
  2. Use your intuition along with your senses to guide yourself through various situations in life. Deal with issues as a whole, and also as parts to be separated out efficiently. Use this Tao to be at your best, maintain your sharpness, and complete your work with satisfaction.
  3. Use hands-on experience to find the optimal balance in everything. Whatever you need to do, there will be the right speed and the right amount of force to give you the best possible results. Keep in mind that this is something you can only learn from life itself—not from books.
  4. Use the art of reduction in every aspect of life. The Tao is all about simplicity, so the Tao process is about subtraction rather than addition. Remove obstacles and complexity to unleash the power of your natural capabilities and to fully express your vast potential.
  5. Use the Tao of leadership when you interact with others. Chuang Tzu will guide you so you will know what to do when called upon to lead, and what to look for when you wish to identify leaders who are aligned with the Tao.
