There were two rooms on the first floor, one at each end of a long corridor. Rohit gently opened the door to the room on the right. Aditya and Meera exchanged an apprehensive glance before following their host into the room.

It resembled a hospital room. The colours were dull and the walls were painted light blue, except for the pale floral wallpaper on the one behind the large double bed. On it, a figure in a white hospital gown lay motionless. Tanvi Acharya was a tall, slim woman with long, brown hair. There was a glow on her face, despite the long bout of illness and depression she had experienced.

Rohit bent over the bed and kissed her forehead. Tanvi did not stir. ‘She is fast asleep. Must be the medicines,’ Rohit said.

Aditya walked to one of the windows looking out on the backyard. It was the same window Meera had pointed to earlier, when she thought someone was watching them. Then he looked again at the motionless figure of Tanvi Acharya.

‘Let’s not disturb her,’ said Aditya.

They walked out of the room and down the stairs in silence.

‘We’ll be in touch,’ Aditya told Rohit, who saw them to the door.

‘Thanks for coming,’ Rohit replied.

‘Take down our numbers, in case of new developments,’ Meera said to Rohit.

They exchanged numbers, Meera smiling to herself as she made a mental note of Aditya’s number.
