THIRTY-SIX

‘Do you think she murdered Chauhan?’ Meera asked Aditya on their way back to Bandra Police Station. ‘Well, the car that hit Chauhan was a dark-coloured Honda SUV. Tanvi owns one. And we know that she can drive, despite her condition. And now this—a three- hundred-crore motive! Too many coincidences. And I don’t believe in coincidences.’ Aditya shook his head.

‘And she threatened Chauhan, that day at the office,’ Meera reminded him.

‘There you go. Makes my argument stronger.’ ‘Why don’t we arrest her then?’

‘On what basis? We have no solid evidence that Tanvi killed Chauhan. All the leads we had seem to converge at a dead end. Not to mention the fact that Rohit claims he crashed the car. And even if we were to prove somehow that Tanvi had a hand in Chauhan’s death, she’ll get away scot-free, given her condition.’ ‘If she is orchestrating all this, it is indeed a master- plot, but ...’

‘But what?’

‘Why is Rohit lying about the car?’

‘Couldn’t you see how terrified he was? If Tanvi had indeed driven the SUV out that morning to kill Chauhan, Rohit couldn’t have been ignorant of the fact. And if he corroborates this, she will kill him. Not to mention the damage such a scandal would do to the reputation of the company,’ Aditya reasoned.

‘But he’s missing the danger sign looming right in front of him. If Rohit dies, his 15 per cent stake will also go to Tanvi, and her share in the company would rise to 45 per cent,’ Meera pointed out.

They drove in silence for the rest of the journey. Cold-blooded, murderous bitch. Tanvi Acharya, you will not get away with this, resolved Aditya.

Aditya was about to get out of the car at Bandra when Meera said, ‘One of my closest friends is getting married in Pune next week. I am going there for a few days. Will you come with me? We can stay at my Pune apartment. It will be a welcome break; we both need it.’ ‘Sure, sounds good. I’ll only be able to join you for a couple of days, though. There is one more thing I have been meaning to tell you.’

‘What?’

‘After this case, we shouldn’t work together ... it’s too much of a distraction for me.’ Aditya smiled and winked. Meera blushed.
