Sheriff Riley called Melancon and Picou into his office, “Don’t get too comfortable, you both need to get ready to head to New Orleans.”
Picou had been dreading this. He feared they were going to ask the FBI for help, “What’s in New Orleans?”
“I have a possible lead.”
Now Picou’s interest was piqued. He was not expecting this news, “Did we get a tip that I don’t know about.”
Sheriff Riley informed them, “We got an ID on the floating Jane Doe. She was a working girl from New Orleans.”
Melancon groaned, “None of those girls will talk to us.”
“They will when you tell them the reason you are there. You want to ask them if they have noticed any disappearances over the last few months, possibly years. We have no idea how long this killer has been drowning his victims, but the sheer number of skeletal remains discovered is shocking.”
Picou, “We can do that, sir.”
As Picou and Melancon headed out for New Orleans, Picou hoped to learn some information that may lead to an arrest. Time was of the essence. At any moment, their killer could kidnap and murder another woman and if someone in New Orleans could give them any information this trip would be worth it.
