The Growth Focuser

All progress starts by telling the truth.

—Dan Sullivan

One of the most effective ways to maximize your growth is to pay attention to where you’re growing and where you’re not on a consistent enough basis that you can consciously make more growth enhancing decisions and choices. Here, we combine the principles of Laws One and Two to create a weekly exercise where you get to use your recent past every week as raw material for creating your bigger future.

We suggest doing the exercise weekly, because if you wait any longer, you’re likely to forget some of the more subtle examples, and shorter periods may make it difficult to come up with enough examples. However, we’ve left a blank space so you can change to whatever works best for you.

The exercise asks you to think about and jot down anything you did, big or small, to grow in the way described by each law in the past week. There are bulleted reminders of some of the broader kinds of growth enhancing activities that belong to each law just to help jog your memory. Your own examples will be more specific things you did.

Start by filling in column one. Don’t worry if you don’t have examples for every law each week. The second column is to record any results you may have seen already from having taken these actions. Fill in this column next. Next, circle the law you’re most proud of your progress on this week and also the one you most want to work on next week. For each of these, write down your reason for choosing them and a next action step.

If you happen to be doing this with a friend or in a group setting, sharing these last two points makes for a good conversation. Having a colleague, friend, partner or family member do the exercise for themselves so you can discuss what you’re each learning and observing will multiply the power of this exercise exponentially. You gain, both in having to articulate your own observations, and in hearing someone else’s on their growth, as well as from the feedback you can offer one another.

To get the most out of this tool, log into lifetimegrowth.com and use the online version, which will allow you to securely archive your results every week so you can track your growth over longer periods of time. You can also print the exercise form there if you prefer to work on paper.
