Christmas time rolled around, and the phone calls stopped. To say I started to sweat was an understatement. I ordered Kadence the promise ring but decided to hold off on that too. I didn’t want my promise to be her Christmas gift. My commitment should be separate. She deserves more because she is so much more to me.
So here I am, already at the end of January, trying to think of some way to give her this ring without coming off as a total sap or not doing enough, so it doesn’t seem like that big of a deal when it is to me. What’s in the middle and why have I let myself put it off so long? She deserved this back when we first got together. She’s stuck beside me the entire time and has given me her full support. How I ended up with someone like her, I’ll never know, but I’m so, so grateful.
Nate says to give her—and I quote—a good dicking and then just slide it on her finger. I can see why my brother’s still single with that one.
Clyde, on the other hand, (yes, I broke down and asked him too) suggested that I should cook for her and maybe put it inside a cake or something.
Yeah, NO.
Clyde’s answer to everything is food. If he ever ends up married, he’s going to have to roll the chick around from stuffing her full of food all the damn time. Kadence thought I was bad about it. She has no idea what Clyde’s woman will go through. Poor lady.
Kadence had such a great time when we’d swam at the pond, and she loves the ranch as much as I do, so I was thinking about doing it there. Maybe laying out a blanket, bringing some snacks—‘cause let’s face it, my brother has rubbed off on me a bit—and then just tell her how much she means to me. I should probably light a fire and bring marshmallows, she loved those too, and she gets cold easily. Oh, and chocolate sauce too. She can dip them in the sauce, and I can also use it to lick off her.
That sounds fantastic. I should’ve thought of this sooner.
A slap on my shoulder shakes me out of my wonderful thoughts of her covered in sugary chocolate sauce. “Yoo-hoo, bro, you were in la-la land. Care to share?” JJ grins and turns back to the video game that he and Niner are busily playing.
“I was just thinking about—”
“Kadence?” Niner interrupts, his eyebrow cocked.
JJ laughs. “Go figure; I’d be surprised if you have a cock between those legs anymore.”
“Shut up, dickface. I’d whip it out, but I don’t want to hurt your feelings,” I retort and Niner snickers. “I was thinking, JJ, have you heard anything new about Briggs? Do you know what went down after he was finally caught?”
“Nope, I know nothing, bro. The last thing Chan said to me about it was that he’d called the police office again, but they still won’t tell him jack. Lila and Haley want nothing to do with any of it, and he’s a wreck trying to get them to press charges. He admitted to me that he’d called one of them twenty-two times one night.”
“Shit, such a mess. I’m glad Briggs is off the field and away from campus at the very least.”
Niner grumbles, staring me down. “I can’t believe it happened to so many females and no one wants to come forward. Next time something like this goes down, you two better say something to me. I’d like the chance to punch him too. No fair you get to have all the fun.”
“Promise man,” I start to reply, but my phone goes off, signaling an incoming call. It’s an out-of-state number, one that I’ve never seen before. Glancing back at the guys, I hold it up, “I gotta get this. I’ll be back.”
They nod as I stand and swipe my finger across the screen, answering as I head toward my bedroom.
“Hello?”
“Yeah, I’m looking for Tyler Owens.”
“Speaking, can I help you?”
“Well, I’m hoping so.”
“Okay.” I drag out the word, not having a clue who it is, but apparently, they know who I am.
“I’d like to discuss a few things with you if you’d be open to it?”
“Excuse me, but who is this?”
“My name’s Brandon...Brandon Diamond, I’m the head coach for New England.” As soon as the words leave his mouth, I want to scream and puke all at the same time. This is the one phone call I’ve been waiting for my entire life it seems like.
“Sir, whatever you need, the answer’s yes.”
They can offer me a ride on the bench and to only make a hundred grand the first year; I couldn’t care less. Because I plan to work my ass off for that team every single day until they give me the shot that I so desperately want. This franchise makes careers, and I want football to be my future.
Coach Diamond chuckles at my response. “How about you fly up here for a visit and check things out?”
“I’d be absolutely honored, sir.”
“Great. I’ll have Rachel get on the line, and she’ll get your travel all booked up. New England can’t wait to see what you’ve got.”
“Thank you,” I reply and damn near die on the spot. One thing’s for certain; I gotta get that ring on my girl’s finger.
