It can be difficult to assess problems from viewpoints other than your own, but different perspectives can unlock imaginative solutions. Use this exercise to develop your mental flexibility.
1. Clearly define your challenge – for example, “I want a better-paying job but no one is hiring right now in my preferred line of work.”
2. Choose four or five famous people you look to as role models because of a specific philosophy that they are known for or a skill that they have. Imagine what advice they would give you. For example, the golfer Tiger Woods might say “Just focus your energy on one thing at a time, improve your skills and continue to think that you are the world’s best.” Mother Theresa might tell you, “Look for an opportunity to volunteer in the type of job that you are seeking so you can gain some experience. By helping others you help yourself.”
3. Ask yourself what would happen if you took the imaginary advice offered by your role models. “What would happen if I listened to Tiger Woods and took things one step at a time? What would happen if I improved my skills in the meantime? What if I told myself I was the world’s best?”
4. Use your “what would happen if” thoughts to explore different perspectives whenever you are feeling discouraged, apathetic or stressed.
