It is no small feat to achieve legendary status in the food-savvy city of New Orleans, but during a multidecade tenure at their eponymous lunch-only eatery, anthony and Gail uglesich did just that. As they explored and expanded New Orleans cuisine, gleefully inventing such glories as Shrimp Uggie and Muddy Water Trout, as well as honing Creole tradition, the family restaurant became a shrine to which devoted eaters thronged from everywhere. You seldom knew exactly what you’d find on the menu, but there was little doubt it would be shockingly good. And you could count on Gail and Anthony’s charismatic presence behind the counter and among the dozen scattered tables, ever eager to share their culinary enthusiasm with friends and newcomers. They loved to tell you exactly which fish were running best that week (and about the dish they created with them) and what the produce market offered Gail that morning before dawn. Their talent, devotion, and endearing personalities made Uglesich’s restaurant a roadfood classic: the informal eat-shack energized by a passion for perfection.
