Develop Your Sleep Plan

Throughout this book you'll find a multitude of sleep solutions. A collection of important ideas are presented in Part II, Eight Sleep Tips for Every Child; I strongly recommend that you incorporate as many of these into your plan as possible. The remaining ideas in the book are subject specific, and you can choose any that suit your situation, your personality, and your family.

How quickly you experience positive changes in your child's sleep will depend on how well you evaluate your child's current sleep patterns, how much thought you put into creating your plan, how persistently you follow your plan, and your child's personality. Writing down your plan will consolidate all your ideas in one place for easy reference and will help you remember the things you are going to do, especially at the end of the day when you're simply too tired to recall the details. Even if you begin by making a few subtle changes, you may see sleep improvement. So go ahead and begin using ideas that make sense to you along the way, even before you settle on an exact plan. The sooner you get started, the better.

As you work through your plan, try to stay relaxed about it, but be consistent. Do give each idea enough time to have an impact— at least two or three weeks. A night or two isn't enough time to judge an idea's value. This is not a quick-fix plan; rather, it will enable you to help your child sleep better over the next few months. After all, it has taken longer than a day or two to get where you are now, and habits and conditions take some time to change, not to mention that biology and maturity are part of the picture, as well. Keep in mind that parenting isn't a sprint—it's a marathon. You've only just begun, so there's no reason to rush yourself or your child.

You can copy and fill in the following pages (or check my website at nocrysleepsolution.com for PDF files to print). The general ideas are outlined for you. When you use solutions that relate to specific situations, you can jot down the page number for future reference.
