In 1913, Bekins Moving Company created this map highlighting a proposed vast park system connecting all of Seattle by greenbelts. An Olmsted design, it was also a “wishful thinking” map—the parks of Seattle exist today but are not connected. (Courtesy Southwest Seattle Historical Society/Log House Museum.)

ON THE COVER: William and Gladys Bernard and family camped at Alki in 1901, before their permanent home, the Fir Lodge, was built. Alki was a summer destination for vacationing families and Seattle residents. Tents like the one pictured had wooden floors raised off the ground and luxurious accoutrements such as oriental carpets and brass fixtures.
