About the Authors

KATHERINE M. HERTLEIN, PHD, is a Professor in the Couple and Family Therapy Program in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health, School of Medicine, University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). She received her master’s degree in marriage and family therapy from Purdue University Calumet and her doctorate in human development with a specialization in marriage and family therapy from Virginia Tech. Across her academic career, she has published over 75 articles, eight books and several book translations, and over 50 book chapters. She has co-edited a book on interventions in couples treatment, interventions for clients with health concerns, and a book on infidelity treatment. Recently, Dr. Hertlein published second editions of Systemic Sex Therapy and A Clinician’s Guide to Systemic Sex Therapy. These two books are used in over 30 couple and family therapy training programs around the US. In 2017, A Clinician’s Guide to Systemic Sex Therapy (2nd ed.) was awarded the 2017 Book Award and Integrative Sex Therapy Award from the American Association for Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists. Dr. Hertlein has also produced the first multitheoretical model detailing the role of technology in couple and family life published in her book The Couple and Family Technology Framework. Dr. Hertlein has won numerous awards including both research and teaching awards. Dr. Hertlein has also been awarded a Fulbright, which enabled her to teach and conduct research in technology and families at the University of Salzburg in Salzburg, Austria. Dr. Hertlein is the Editor-In-Chief of the Journal of Couple and Relationship Therapy. Dr. Hertlein’s work has been featured in various media outlets including Men’s Health, The APA Monitor, The Atlantic, and The Huffington Post. She lectures nationally and internationally on technology, couples, and sex. Dr. Hertlein maintains a private practice in Las Vegas, Nevada.

MARKIE LOUISE CHRISTIANSON (L. C.) TWIST, PHD, is the Program Coordinator of the Graduate Certificate in Sex Therapy Program, and Professor in the Human Development and Family Studies Department and Marriage and Family Therapy Program at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Markie received their master’s degrees in education and marriage and family therapy with an emphasis in sex therapy from Northern Arizona University and University of Louisiana at Monroe respectively, and their doctorate in human development and family studies with a specialization in couple and family therapy from Iowa State University. Dr. Twist is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (IA, NV) and Mental Health Counselor (IA), American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy Clinical Fellow and Approved Supervisor, and an American Association for Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists Certified Sexuality Educator and Certified Sexuality Educator Supervisor. Markie is co-author of the books The Couple and Family Technology Framework: Intimate Relationships in a Digital Age, and Focused Geno-grams: Intergenerational Assessment of Individuals, Couples, and Families (2nd ed.). Dr. Twist serves as the Editor-in-Chief of Sexual and Relationship Therapy: International Perspectives on Theory, Research and Practice. Markie is also co-editor of the book Eco-Informed Practice: Family Therapy in an Age of Ecological Peril. Markie has won numerous awards for mentorship and research.
