Chapter 16

Good-Bye

Boss Baby and I had done it. We had saved my parents and saved Baby Corp. So we both should have been pretty happy, right?

But I really wasn’t. Because it was time for Boss Baby to go back to Baby Corp.

He packed all his stuff into his suitcase and called a taxi. I brought him outside.

His team of babies was out there waiting for him.

“Well, team, good job,” he addressed them. Then he turned to Staci and handed her a letter of recommendation. “Staci, this should get you into the school of your choice.”

Next, he gave the triplets some advice. “It’s okay to think for yourself,” he told them.

“No sir/No way/That’s a terrible idea,” they said.

“That’s the attitude!” Boss Baby encouraged.

“You’re so right/You got it, sir/Absolutely, B.B.,” they replied.

Boss Baby just looked up at me and rolled his eyes. I laughed.

Then it was time to say good-bye to Jimbo. Boss Baby had something special for him: a cookie. “Here you go, big guy. You’ve earned it.”

Jimbo was so touched he started to cry. He grabbed Boss Baby for a big hug.

“I’ll miss you too, buddy!” said Boss Baby. Jimbo finally put him down and the babies started to walk off.

Then it was just me and him.

“Congratulations on your promotion,” I said. “The corner office, the private potty, all that stuff.”

“But hey, how about you?” Boss Baby asked. “You have your parents all to yourself.”

I nodded. It was what I had wanted all along. But now I wasn’t so sure.

“So, what am I gonna tell Mom and Dad after you leave?” I asked.

“Don’t worry,” Boss Baby said. “Baby Corp. has a procedure for situations like this. It’ll be like, uh . . . I was never born.”

Like he was never born . . .

“Oh, I almost forgot,” Boss Baby said. He reached into his briefcase and pulled out Lam-Lam, all stitched up and good as new.

“No way! You fixed her!” I said.

“Yep. She’s a tough one,” Boss Baby answered.

I started to walk away. Then I looked back at Boss Baby. “Well, I guess we both got what we wanted.”

Boss Baby nodded. “It’s a win-win.”

He walked up to the door of the taxi. Then he stopped. I thought for a minute that he wouldn’t leave. But he pointed up to the door handle.

“Oh yeah. Right,” I said, and I opened the door for him and helped him hop in.

“Tim, thanks for everything,” Boss Baby said.

“You’re welcome,” I said.

Then I waved to Boss Baby as the taxi cab drove away.
