“Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, ‘Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory!’ . . . And God granted his request.”

— 1 Chronicles 4:10

The Price of Blessing

We all want to be blessed. Jabez was no different. One thing he asked God for was “enlarged territory.” That can mean more land, but it can also mean having more power or a more important job.

Rachel wanted the most important role in the musical her middle school planned to perform. She wanted to play the lead singer, Maria, in The Sound of Music. She worked hard before tryouts, learning lines and music. When the auditions were over, she nearly fainted with joy when her name was listed beside “Maria Von Trapp.” Soon, however, Rachel realized the honor came with many added responsibilities. She worked longer hours. She attended individual rehearsals with the vocal and drama teachers. After practicing many nights till nine o’clock, she still had all her homework to do. When God answers a prayer for more blessings, people are thrilled! (At least for a while.) Soon they realize that blessings also carry new responsibilities. So don’t pray for the blessing if you’re not ready for the added responsibility.

But if you’re ready and have done a heart check-up on your motives, go ahead and ask! God loves to bless his children.
