“May your roots go down deep into the soil of God’s marvelous love; and may you be able to feel and understand, as all God’s children should, how long, how wide, how deep, and how high his love really is; and to experience this love for yourselves.”

— Ephesians 3:17, 18 (TLB)

God’s Love: First, Free, Forever

You could spend your whole lifetime, and ten bazillion, gazillion lifetimes, thinking about God’s love, and still have more to think about. For now, though, let’s check out these three big points:

God loved us first. He tagged you way before you even were “you,” before your parents met, before Adam and Eve ate the apple. “Long before he laid down earth’s foundations,” the Bible says, “he had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of his love” (Ephesians 1:4 MSG).

God’s love is free. We can’t buy it. We can’t earn it. It’s not based on whether we wear Hollister, or whether we’re on the dance team, or how good we are. There are no strings attached.

God’s love is forever — the only kind that will last and last. It won’t break. It won’t spoil. You can’t lose it. As Paul says, “nothing can separate us from his love: neither life nor death, neither angels nor other heavenly rulers or powers, neither the present nor the future, neither the world above nor the world below” (Romans 8:38 – 39 TEV).
