“I will pour out my Spirit on all people . . . Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days.”

— Joel 2:28 – 29

Fire of Faith!

The disciples could believe in Jesus because – hello! – he was right there with them. But we don’t see Jesus in the flesh or hear him talking to us like a person. We can’t follow him around to watch him turn a kid’s lunch into a whole banquet. And yet we know he still lives, in us, through us, around us. What’s that about?

It’s about the Holy Spirit, another thing God promised through a prophet. He said he would pour out his spirit on ALL people. That was a huge promise back then, because there were strict rules about who was better than whom. But God promised he would allow his Spirit to pour over absolutely everyone, so that all could be forgiven and comforted.

Many, many years later, after Jesus had gone back up to heaven, great tongues of fire rested on the disciples and “all of them were filled with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:4). When people wanted to know what was going on (were the disciples drunk? they wondered), Peter reminded them of God’s promise in Joel’s prophecy. The promise is still there. For you. For everyone.
