“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us — whatever we ask — we know that we have what we asked of him.”

— 1 John 5:14 – 15

Asking and Receiving

Gabby had always had a hot temper. She hated being told what to do — by her parents, her teachers, her older brother, her youth pastor. She didn’t really mean to, but argumentative words flew out of her mouth before she thought about it, and she was tired of the consequences. Then she read a verse in the Bible: “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry” (James 1:19). Gabby correctly figured that if God wanted her to be slow to speak, God would give her the power.

We can be sure that God will listen to us whenever we ask him for anything in agreement with his own plan. And how can we know what that is? We can find God’s will in his Word. It’s spelled out for us in his commands and needs to be “stored” in our minds and hearts. Then, since we positively know he is listening when we make our requests, we can be sure that he’ll give us what we ask for.
