“Everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.”

— 1 John 5:4 – 5

Victory!

Are you fighting a battle? Maybe you’re a believer, but always blame your red hair and Irish ancestry for your terrible temper. After exploding at people, you laugh it off. “After all, I’m a hotheaded Irishman!” Lately, though, it isn’t funny. You lost two good friends after letting your anger spew on them. Then you were kicked off the basketball team for yelling at the coach and the referee. If you don’t overcome your hot temper soon, you won’t have any friends left. It’s time to fight back — and win. So you try, but find it much harder than you expected.

We feel so weak and small, so how can we defeat the enemies inside us plus those around us in the world? Can we really be overcomers? Yes, because we’re not doing the fighting. It’s Jesus in us — fighting the war for us. “You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world” (1 John 4:4). And what should our attitude be? “But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 15:57 NKJV).
