“The battle is the Lord’s.”

— 1 Samuel 17:47

Reaching Goals: Lean on God

Just before the battle with Goliath in 1 Samuel 17, David announced to one and all that he expected God to win this battle for him. David was well aware that in his own strength, he was no match at all for Goliath. Yes, David had to step up to the battle line himself. He also totally depended on God to save him.

Because of different personalities, many believers go to extremes. Sarah sits back, does nothing but pray, and says she’s “just trusting the Lord” to give her good grades. (No, she’s not. She’s being lazy.) Wendy works hard from dawn to dusk, rarely prays, and believes she will succeed someday in the music field based on her own talent. (No, she won’t. She’s arrogant and thinks she doesn’t need God’s help for anything.) Be careful that you don’t fall into error either way.

Successfully reaching your goals depends on two things that might, at first, seem like opposites. You need to do the necessary work, praying each step of the way. But you also need to understand that it is God who will give you the power to succeed. To reach your goals, find the balance.

Do plan, be persistent, and be confident. Then, leaning on God, take action — for the battle is the Lord’s.
