“You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.”

— Hebrews 10:36

Promises Worth Waiting For

TV shows, movies, and magazines cry, “Get it now!” It might be an instant meal, instant beauty, or instant wealth. God’s Word says the opposite. He gives a promise or principle and tells you how to obtain it. After you’ve done what God said, there might be a waiting period before the promise appears. God uses that waiting period to “grow you up” spiritually, developing character qualities that will benefit you all your life.

What things has God promised to give believers? Everything from love and peace to eternal life. He also gives us wise principles to live by. For example, if you need money, check out these ideas: “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed” (Proverbs 11:25). And “all hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty” (Proverbs 14:23). Your part? Work hard and be generous. Practicing these principles over time can turn your circumstances around.

Being patient is not the ability to sit calmly and do nothing, waiting for something to happen. Patient perseverance, the kind needed to receive God’s promises, is very active. It is the ability to hang tough when it gets hard. Instead, “rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him” (Psalm 37:7 NKJV). Your promise is on its way!
