“I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me . . . You make known to me the path of life.”

— Psalm 16:7, 11

The Teacher for Tough Times

Wouldn’t it be great to have your own personal tutor who was at your beck and call 24/7? If you were having trouble with long division, you could just turn and say, “Could I get a little help here, please?” That’s probably not going to happen — unless your daddy gets a giant promotion! But when it comes to the other things in life that you need help with, you do have a Personal Teacher. That would be, of course, God.

Difficulties with anger or lying or temptation — God can help you handle that. Tough times with a teacher, a coach, a babysitter — God knows all about tough times. There isn’t anything God doesn’t have an answer for.

It takes some practice to rely on God for individual instruction. It means figuring out what’s bothering you, which God can help you with, then finding that quiet place and taking the time to be with God and talk it out. And listening — through the Bible, through wise people, through acting on what you think God is telling you and seeing how it works.

Go to God, the best Teacher, first, because he will often lead you to just the right people at just the right time. All you have to do is ask.
