“I the Lord do not change.”

— Malachi 3:6

No Variation

Mia and Lori were best friends all through grade school, and Mia assumed they always would be. But when they started going to a middle school that blended four elementary schools, things changed. Lori wanted to include new girls in everything they did. Then Mia found out that Lori was going to movies and shopping with them — but not inviting her along. Most times when Mia invited Lori to spend the night, Lori referred vaguely to “other plans.” Plans that no longer included Mia. It was hard for Mia to admit that things had changed with Lori, and changed drastically. Accepting the change was painful.

People do change, and sometimes people will let us down. They’re human, not perfect. No matter how many people change, remember that God is always constant. No matter where you live, no matter what you’re going through — God never changes. You can bet your life on it, and you can settle down and rest. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). If you’re a follower of Jesus, your inner life can also be stable and solid and unchanging. No matter what.
