“I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die.”

— John 11:25

Alive? Forever!

Has anyone you loved died? Maybe a precious grandparent or a pet you treasured? It’s so hard because that person or furry companion is never coming back. But what if the one who has passed on did return?

Jesus had three friends who were brother and sisters to each other: Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. He loved them like family. While Jesus was out of town, Lazarus got very sick, and Mary and Martha sent for Jesus, knowing how he healed people. Instead of hurrying back, he told his disciples that Lazarus’ illness wasn’t going to end in death and this would be a good chance to show who God was.

But Lazarus died, and by the time Jesus got there, he’d been in his tomb for four days. He told them to take him to the tomb and roll away the stone. Jesus simply said, “Lazarus, come out!” (John 11:43). And Lazarus walked out, still wrapped up in the burial cloths, looking a little like a mummy.

What was that all about? Jesus showed that God even has power over death. He assured them that we’ll all leave this earth, but he is the coming-back-to-life after our time here is over. A life that goes on forever with him.
