“This kind can come out only by prayer.”

— Mark 9:29

Power Trip

Jesus didn’t come just to heal, but to give the ability to others to be healers. Can you even imagine being one of the people Jesus trusted with that? What a rush, huh? You put your hands on people who are crippled or mentally confused and just like that, they can walk and think like everyone else. After a few times, do you think you’d start to get pretty proud of your sweet self? That might be what happened with the disciples.

A man had brought his son to them, because he was having foam-at-the-mouth seizures. But the disciples couldn’t drive out the spirit. Why not? After Jesus drove out the spirit for the boy, he explained to the disciples that they had forgotten to pray, to call on God’s power to do the healing. They didn’t remember where their ability to heal came from.

Whenever we need healing or we want to help someone else get better, we need to call on God. If we have trouble believing that God’s going to come through, we can do as the boy’s father did and say, “Help me overcome my unbelief.” God will do that.
