“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”

— 2 Corinthians 12:9

Weakness Wins

Weak” is the opposite of “strong,” right? Just like “hot” is the opposite of “cold,” and “adults talking about insurance” is the opposite of “interesting.”

That’s usually true. But when it comes to God, sometimes he sees us the strongest when we admit we’re the weakest. Here’s what that looks like.

Let’s say you don’t have much trouble resisting temptation. Nobody can talk you into lying or cheating or talking about Susie behind her back. It’s so easy for you, you hardly even consider where your strength comes from. And then a new girl moves to your school, a girl who can play soccer like Mia Hamm. She scores more goals in the first game than you have all season — and suddenly it isn’t so easy to keep from pointing out that her dribbling is sloppy or she commits fouls nobody else sees. You’ve found your weakness.

What do you have to do to avoid becoming what you always thought you were too good to be? You have no choice. You have to turn to God, who — hello! — gave you that strength in the first place. Now you can really be strong because you know you can’t do it without God’s help.
