“Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

— Joshua 1:9

Mega Courage

Suppose you wave good-bye to your mom and follow the stewardess into the plane. Hopefully your legs will hold you up till you find your seat. You’re flying — alone — to spend the summer with your dad and his new wife in Colorado. You’ve never been so scared in your life. What if Crissy, your new stepmom, doesn’t like you? What if you hate the town, the house, your room? You buckle your seat belt and blink back tears.

While taxiing to the runway, you dig in your backpack. What’s that? You pull out a small package with your mom’s handwriting on it: “Read this if you’re afraid.” It’s a tiny pink Bible. In it is a card with verses. You read eagerly: “The Lord is my light and my salvation — whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life — of whom shall I be afraid?” (Psalm 27:1); and “I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go” (Genesis 28:15). Many times during the flight — and during the summer — you read God’s Word for courage. Your strength increases as you grow to believe that God’s in total control of everything you face. You can have that confidence every day!
