“They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.”

— Luke 6:48

How’s Your Foundation?

A firm foundation is critical when building things. Suppose you’re helping your brother build a toy house with blocks. Without a broad base at the bottom, the blocks on top soon topple over. Or when cheerleading teams build pyramids, the strongest members make up the bottom row. Then the lighter-weight members will be safely held up. When a new house is built, cement provides a solid foundation.

You want the same kind of solid foundation in your own life. How do you acquire it? By studying God’s Word, then applying it to the situations in your life. If you do that on a consistent basis, you can avoid many of the storms by wise actions. If you don’t bother, “you ignored my advice and rejected the correction I offered,” then “calamity overcomes you like a storm, you are engulfed by trouble, and anguish and distress overwhelm you” (Proverbs 1:25, 27 NLT).

Some storms come into every girl’s life though, even when you do everything right. When they come, make sure there aren’t any leaks in your foundation, then ride out the storm. When it’s over, you’ll still be standing!
