“We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they are good for us — they help us learn to endure. And endurance develops strength of character in us.”

— Romans 5:3 – 4 (NLT)

God Uses Problems to Perfect You

We can have joy even in the middle of problems and pain. We aren’t happy because we have problems, but because we know the suffering has a purpose. Part of God’s purpose is to produce character in his children. However, the problems themselves don’t build character. Responding correctly to problems is what develops a godly character.

Beth and Rosa both had mean stepfathers. Rosa refused to do things he asked, got into yelling matches, and ended up running away from home. Beth’s stepfather was just as difficult to get along with, but she chose to respond to her situation differently. Beth decided to be quiet, but pray for her stepfather’s heart to be softened. It didn’t happen overnight — it took endurance on Beth’s part — but within a year she and her stepfather were spending time together fishing. Two situations — two very different responses — and two very different outcomes.

We start out as spiritual babies, and we need to grow up. If we always got everything we wanted, when we wanted it, we’d be spoiled and remain babies. So the next time you face a problem, be determined to learn from it.
