“Moses said to God, ‘Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?’ ”

— Exodus 3:11

I Will Be With You

Talk about scary. Moses was minding his own business just tending his father-in-law’s flock of sheep when suddenly a bush burst into flames but didn’t burn up. In fact, it talked — and told Moses it was God.

But the truly terrifying part was when God said to Moses, “Now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt” (Exodus 3:10). The Pharaoh was powerful enough to have anybody — or everybody — snuffed out if he got ticked off enough. When God told Moses to go to the palace and say, “All right, Pharaoh, give ’em up, let’s go,” it was enough to make Moses say, “Me? You want me to do what?”

The first thing we human beings do when asked to do the seemingly impossible is say, “I can’t. You don’t understand: I’m not the one for the job.” We might get away with that with just plain people, but not with God. He simply says, as he did to Moses, “I will be with you” (Exodus 3:12). So what does God expect? He expects us to believe that he knows who the right person is for the job. He is, after all, God.
