“Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble on this people, and you have not rescued your people at all.”

— Exodus 5:23

A Lot to Ask

God reassured Moses, right there in the burning bush, that he would be with him when he went to the Pharaoh. But even after he gave Moses clear instructions and promised him it was all going to turn out okay — Moses still wasn’t convinced.

After all, he wasn’t the sharpest tack in the box when it came to public speaking. It was all he could do to say, “Pardon your servant, Lord. Please send someone else” (Exodus 4:13). So God told Moses he could take his brother Aaron with him, who could wow people with his words. When Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh, though, he pretty much laughed in their faces and made the Israelites work even harder. Some of them went to Moses and Aaron and told them to back off — they were better off before they started making noises with the Pharaoh. Moses went to God and said, “What are you doing? Why aren’t you working with me here?”

God said Moses had to trust that this was the way to do it. God makes the same thing clear to us. He expects us to speak his Word and trust that he knows what he’s doing, even when it doesn’t seem like it.
