“Blessed is the one you discipline, Lord, the one you teach from your law; you grant them relief from days of trouble, till a pit is dug for the wicked.”

— Psalm 94:12 – 13

How to Stay Calm, No Matter What

Some problems are over quickly, but some seem to drag on and on. Maybe your mom has a serious illness that requires constant medical attention. Or you have an older brother who gets in scrapes with the police and embarrasses you at school and church. Maybe you’re teased about your weight, but getting in shape is taking forever.

Wouldn’t you love to have the power to stay calm, no matter what happened? You can have this power! But before the power comes, God uses the events and people in our lives to build our spiritual character. He may teach you about the power of prayer during your mom’s illness. He may teach you about self-discipline in food and exercise as you get in shape.

Why is God’s discipline good? (It sure doesn’t FEEL good sometimes!) This is what David said about it: “I used to wander off until you disciplined me; but now I closely follow your word. You are good and do only good; teach me your principles” (Psalm 119:67 – 68 NLT).
