“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

— Psalm 34:18

Whispers of Love

Do you remember the last time you were brokenhearted? It hurt, didn’t it, when your best friend dumped you? Or your grandpa died. Or your dad didn’t get home for your birthday. It actually feels like your chest has been split in two, especially when you cry, as most of us do when our spirits are crushed by some hurtful life-thing.

And yet, “the Lord is close to the brokenhearted” (Psalm 34:18). Even before you start to cry, even before you realize how hurt you are, God is already there with the heavenly tissue, the almighty hug. And when you throw yourself down on your bed or throw tennis balls against the fence, you can feel God whispering that he’s so sorry you’re in pain. He doesn’t let you skip the tears and the hurting chest and the heaviness of a broken heart. But he does let you rely on him to lead you through your feelings and gives you space to feel them. That’s especially important if other people tell you not to cry.

Best of all: he will heal your broken heart. God eases into the raw places and not only makes you feel better, he makes you stronger.
