“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It straightens us out and teaches us to do what is right.”

— 2 Timothy 3:16 (NLT)

Instruction Book

God’s Word, from beginning to end, is true. The Bible is our instruction manual. It teaches us how to live godly, successful lives. It is also useful to correct us when we take a wrong path.

Emily received a cell phone for her birthday, but she was soon so frustrated that she was ready to toss it in her desk drawer and leave it. She couldn’t program her friends’ phone numbers into it. She couldn’t figure out how to text-message. It was supposed to have a choice of twenty different rings, but she couldn’t get it to play the tune she wanted. Frustrated, she went to find her dad. “This thing doesn’t work,” Emily said. Her dad took the phone and pressed a few buttons. “Looks okay. Did you read the instruction book?” he asked.

In the same way that Emily needed to read the instruction manual for her cell phone, we need to read God’s Word, our instructions for living. The Bible isn’t just to carry to church on Sunday morning. In it, we have God’s blueprint for our lives. It has the answer to every need we might have. But we need to read and study it.
