“Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet . . . [but] Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him.”

— Luke 18:39 – 40

Don’t Hush Up — Speak Up!

Why is it that sometimes — a lot of times! — when you speak up about something that’s bugging you, people shush you? Seriously, you’re on a car trip and you say, “I’m hungry,” or “I have to go to the bathroom,” or you just want to know, “Are we there yet?” and your parents jump all over you.

The blind man in the Bible story must have felt that way. He was sitting by the roadside when Jesus passed by, and he realized he might actually have a chance to see again and not have to beg for food and money. So he called out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” And what did the people in the crowd with Jesus do? They “rebuked” him. They told him, sharply, to back off. Jesus, they said, didn’t have time to listen to him.

Hello! Healing people was what Jesus did! He ordered the man to be brought to him and healed him on the spot.

If you have something important to say, especially if you want to be “healed” of something — whether it’s cluelessness in math or loneliness for your always-working dad — speak up to God, and don’t shrink if people tell you to hush up. God wants to hear you.
